How To: Update Your Powder Room

[ Powder Room - noun/ place ]

A powder room is a small bathroom that contains only a toilet and a sink. They are sometimes called guest bathrooms or half baths. There is no shower or tub in a powder room. The powder room is normally a very small room that is conveniently located and rarely contains a window.

Do you have a simple powder room that is in desperate need of an update?

Let me help you get started! Follow these easy tips to complete the project yourself or give me a call to schedule a consultation to discuss your project. Check it out...

There are a few ways to go about this update--depending on your style and budget.

  • Lighting. You can get a basic vanity bar light for around $30, or specialty fixtures that can range from $75-$400. These come in different shapes, sizes, and bulb-count. You can hang your light over the mirror or next to it at about eye level or higher.

  • Mirror. Yes, you have to have a mirror (those are the rules). This also has a lot of options: rectangle/ round, attached/ hanging, framed/ frameless, beveled, storage behind, etc.

  • Walls. You can keep it simple by painting it a light, neutral color, add interest by going with a bolder color, or go crazy and add wallpaper. The possibilities, again, are endless. It's a small room, so the wallpaper wouldn't be outrageously costly if you decide to create a custom look with a print or texture.

  • Vanity. There are a few options here: paint the existing, replace with a similar vanity, or replace with a pedestal sink (just the sink, no storage). You can purchase a pre-fabricated vanity with cabinet, counter top, sink, and faucet included for about $250-$400 if you want to go the easy route. If you're looking for something more specific, there are plenty of custom-cabinet makers that can build your vanity base, stone companies that have beautiful stone slabs in every color, even in perfectly-sized remnants for a discounted price.

  • Flooring. Whether you continue the existing flooring from outside the powder room to the inside, or get new all tile, this small floor-plan could be done quickly so you won't have a long turnaround.
